Endocrine Disruptors in Your Tap Water: The Hormone Story Nobody Talks About

Researchers have documented a real, sustained decline in men's hormonal health across generations — testosterone falling more than one percent per year in American men independent of aging,[1] and sperm counts in Western men down more than 50 percent since the 1970s.[2] The causes are multiple and still debated, but one under-examined factor is what's dissolved in tap water: documented endocrine disruptors like PFAS, lead, and arsenic. No filter restores testosterone or fixes hormones — that's not a claim we'd ever make. What good filtration does is remove the documented disruptors from the water you drink, which is one of the few variables here you actually control.

Something has been happening to men's hormonal health, quietly, for decades — and it's finally getting talked about. I'm a water guy, not a doctor, so I'm going to stay carefully in my lane here: I'll show you what the published research says, name the studies, and then talk about the one piece of this I actually know something about — what's in your water, and what you can take out of it. What I won't do is sell you a filter as a testosterone cure, because that would be nonsense and you'd be right not to trust me if I did.

What the Data Actually Shows About Men's Hormones

Let's ground this in real, citable numbers instead of vibes.

In 2007, a team led by Thomas Travison published a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism titled "A Population-Level Decline in Serum Testosterone Levels in American Men." Tracking men across three time periods, they found testosterone declining by roughly 1.2 percent per year — and, critically, this was a generational decline that couldn't be explained by the men simply getting older, by rising obesity, or by other usual suspects. A 60-year-old man in the early 2000s had meaningfully lower testosterone than a 60-year-old man measured 15 years earlier.[1]

A separate line of research looked at sperm. In 2017, a meta-analysis led by Hagai Levine, published in Human Reproduction Update, pooled 185 studies covering nearly 43,000 men. Among men in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, sperm concentration had fallen 52.4 percent and total sperm count 59.3 percent between 1973 and 2011 — and the decline showed no sign of leveling off.[2]

One more finding from that same analysis is worth sitting with, because it points somewhere specific: the steep decline showed up in Western populations, but not in the studies from South America, Asia, and Africa.[2] That geographic split is exactly what you'd expect if a big part of the story were environmental and industrial — something about the modern Western living environment, not human biology in general.

I want to be careful here. No single study proves what's causing this, and the researchers themselves are cautious — it's almost certainly multiple factors stacked together. But the direction is not in doubt, and the pattern points at least partly at the environment. So it's fair to ask: what in the environment? And one honest answer is: some of it is in the water.

What an Endocrine Disruptor Is

Your endocrine system is the network of glands that makes and regulates hormones — the chemical messengers that control everything from metabolism to reproduction. An endocrine-disrupting chemical is a substance that interferes with that system: mimicking a hormone, blocking one, or throwing off the levels your body is trying to maintain. The EPA and other health agencies track a growing list of them, and a number show up in drinking water.[3]

The key word is documented. I'm not talking about anything speculative here — I'm talking about specific chemicals that federal health agencies have formally linked to hormonal and reproductive effects, and that also happen to be measurable in tap water.

The Endocrine Disruptors Documented in Drinking Water

PFAS — the "forever chemicals." This is the strongest and best-documented case. The EPA and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) both report that PFAS exposure is associated with thyroid hormone disruption — and the thyroid is a core part of the endocrine system. The agencies also link PFAS to reproductive and developmental harm, and specifically to increased risk of testicular cancer.[4] These are population-level associations tied to long-term exposure, not a certainty for any one person — but they are exactly the kind of hormonal and reproductive effects that make PFAS the headline endocrine disruptor in water. Lead. Lead is one of the most thoroughly documented reproductive toxicants there is. The EPA's health goal for lead in water is zero — the only contaminant with an explicit "no safe level" — and its documented harms include reproductive and developmental effects.[5] Lead rarely comes from the source water; it leaches from old service lines and solder, which is why it's an address-by-address issue worth testing for.

Arsenic. Arsenic is a confirmed human carcinogen that's also linked to adverse pregnancy and developmental outcomes, and it leaches into Utah water from local geology and mining legacy.[5] It's on this list because reproductive and developmental harm is squarely in endocrine-disruptor territory.

Pharmaceutical residues. Trace amounts of pharmaceuticals — including hormone-active compounds — are increasingly detected in municipal water supplies nationally, because conventional treatment isn't designed to remove them. This is a documented and growing area of concern, though the long-term health significance at trace levels is still being studied.[3]

I'm deliberately leaving some things off this list. You'll see fluoride described as an endocrine disruptor in a lot of online content; the evidence there is genuinely contested, so I'll just say that some people choose to reduce fluoride for their own reasons and leave the hormone claims to the researchers still arguing about it.

The Utah Angle: Metals from Mining

If you live in Utah, there's a local reason the metals on that list deserve attention. Utah recently ranked second in the nation for total toxic chemical releases in the EPA's Toxics Release Inventory, with more than 90 percent coming from the Bingham Canyon Mine southwest of Salt Lake City — and the chemicals the inventory names include arsenic, lead, mercury, and selenium.[6] Those are public-record figures under a federal reporting program, not an accusation. But arsenic and lead are on the documented-disruptor list above, and over time metals like these can migrate from soil and tailings into groundwater. Lifestyle Factors Matter Too — Honestly

I'd be doing you a disservice if I let you walk away thinking your water is the whole story. It isn't, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. The research points to several lifestyle factors that also track with declining hormonal health:

  • Everyday plastics. Compounds like BPA and phthalates, found in some plastic containers and packaging, are among the more studied environmental endocrine disruptors — and heating food in plastic or drinking from plastic bottles left in a hot car increases exposure.
  • Body composition. Higher body fat is associated with lower testosterone, and the relationship appears to run both directions.
  • A sedentary routine and poor sleep. Both are consistently linked to lower testosterone in the research.

Water is one factor among several. What makes it worth focusing on is that it's one of the few on this list you can address with a single, one-time decision rather than a lifelong grind of willpower — you fix the water once, and it stays fixed.

What You Can Actually Control at the Tap

If a water pitch ever tells you it will, walk away. Can tap water lower testosterone?

No single study proves tap water alone lowers testosterone, and it would be dishonest to claim it. What's documented is that certain contaminants in drinking water — PFAS especially — are linked by the EPA and ATSDR to hormonal and reproductive effects, and that men's testosterone and sperm counts have declined for generations in ways partly attributed to environmental factors. Water is one plausible, controllable piece of a multi-factor picture.

What are endocrine disruptors in drinking water?

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals interfere with the body's hormone system. The ones documented in drinking water include PFAS ("forever chemicals," linked to thyroid disruption and reproductive harm), lead (a documented reproductive toxicant with no safe level), arsenic (linked to developmental harm), and trace pharmaceutical residues. Conventional municipal treatment isn't designed to remove most of them.

Will a water filter fix my hormones or fertility?

No, and be skeptical of anyone who says it will. A filter removes contaminants from water — that's the entire claim. It does not treat, cure, or restore any hormonal or reproductive condition. Does reverse osmosis remove endocrine disruptors?
